- I find this information very interesting. My company manufactures the
- AMQUEST HyperModem V.34. This product will support up to 230,000 BPS
- throughput and has a enhanced microcontroller architecture to better
- compress
- and decompress data. The fundamental problem with many modems is that
- they are all rated 28.8 V.34 115,200 max. However, they lack the
- horsepower
- to handle above 88,000 bps throughput. Since in the past many people were
- getting 21,600 connections it was not a major problem 4:1 at 21,600 =80K
- However, burst of data can achieve higher than 4:1 but are constrained by
- the low cost modems archicture (Microcontroller, etc.). So in order to
- handle
- the best case bursts you need to beef up the Microcontroller with more
- horsepower or you don't get the benefits of the better situations. We did
- this
- on the HyperModem. Then you run into the 115,200 barrier which is not
- real.
- This is an arbitrary spec set in the early days of PCs by Intel. You can
- set it
- faster if you have the right hardware. So we set this at 230,000 bps.
- When
- you solve these problems you can get much faster throughput capabilities.
- However, you must also remember that the other factors of phone line,
- other
- modem, etc. also make a big difference.
- Incidentally, there are very expensive modems such as the Couriers from
- USR
- and others which have very powerful architectures but also have very
- powerful
- prices. We have the best of both.
- You will also see other modems rated at 230,000. They in most if not all
- cases
- either use direct input ie:PCMCIA,, Parallel Port, special serial cards
- and
- require proprietary software and drivers.
- We work with our modem (Internal) and your existing software. The modem
- recognizes that you want the fastest rate and compensates for your
- software.
- Our external serial version would require a 230 serial card but would then
-
- work the same.
- Thanks. Believe it or not it really works.
